Our activity covers practically all problem investigations on the development of technical means in the area of ice navigation.
The laboratory plays a leading role in the feasibility study, construction, tests and mastering in operation of icebreakers and
icebreaking cargo ships of the Russian Arctic fleet.
PERSPECTIVE DEVELOPMENT:
Forecast of the development of icebreakers and cargo ships |
Search for non-conventional facilities of the icebreaking |
Feasibility study and optimization of principal parameters of ships and icebreakers |
Mathematical modeling of the ship motion in ice |
DAY-TO-DAY NEEDS OF THE FLEET:
Expertise of icebreaker and ship designs |
Ice Certificates and Interim Recommendations on Ice Safety |
Acceptance and trials of new ships |
Mastering in the operation of newly built ships (analysis of navigational conditions, statistics of damages) |
Proposals for the improvement of existing ships and correction of those being constructed |
RULES, REQUIREMENTS, RECOMMENDATIONS:
Participation in the development of regulations for navigation on the Northern Sea Route and freezing ports of the Russian Federation |
Technical and operational requirements to perspective ships |
Requirements to strength, propulsion and manoeuvrability as well as to propeller-rudder units and other means increasing the icebreaking capability |
Recommendations for the selection of hull lines, ice class and power of ice-going ships |
INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITY:
International shipping research projects INSROP, ARCDEV and ARCOP |
Unified IACS requirements, IMO Guidelines for ships operating in Arctic ice-covered waters and HELCOM recommendations on winter navigation in the Baltic Sea |
Development of technical means for the exploration of hydrocarbon deposits on the shelf of Arctic seas |
Consulting services to foreign shipbuilders, ship-owners and oil&gas companies |
The experience for 30 years of active scientific investigations, gained unique academic and practical knowledge, numerous engineering
developments, systematic model and full-scale trials of ships in ice allow the laboratory to be at the forefront of the world
icebreaker-building.
